Hello again! Now that there are 6 of us in camp it's much harder to get
time on a computer. We had an efficient offload this week & are now fully
stocked with fresh produce & frozen meat. What a treat to eat salad again. The
boat also brought 3 days of miserable weather - rain, sleet, strong winds. It's
very hard on the penguin chicks & many of them freeze to death. They also
become nasty little mud balls, so my clothes are now covered with penguin
filth from doing chick weights. Today we have another stellar day - sunny
& calm. We'll be doing more diet sampling today. It's great with Wayne around
because he is a true penguin expert with 25 yrs of experience under his
belt. I can learn a lot from him. Sorting krill also goes much faster with
3 of us. The Nat Geo photographer spent a day with us on the cape.
Unfortunately it was our worst, wettest weather yet, so all her photos are
of soggy seal pups. She took a lot of shots of us doing seal pup weights.
The pups are getting huge-15 kg (that may not sound like a lot, but try
catching & carrying 100 of them.) I need to head out & check my nests. We
have a big day ahead of us. I also seem to be the only one who sticks to my e-mail limit. I've sent some
photos on disk back to the US, so hopefully you'll get to see some of
them.
I hope all is well. I'm still doing great & loving Antarctic life.
Take care,
Love,
Iris
